In a ceramic filter for the removal of soot from the exhaust gases of diesel engines, in which a plurality of porous ceramic surfaces mechanically retain the soot, in order to achieve removal of the soot using low electrical powers, partial segments of the filter are provided with electrical heating elements and the exhaust gas flow passing through the partial segments is electrically heated in successive segments to the combustion temperature of the soot.
