In a tool of an ultrasonic welding apparatus for metal workpieces, especially for the connection of wires and/or cords, a sonotrode as an active welding electrode is assigned at least one anvil as a counterelectrode. It is known from the state of the art to provide recesses on the circumferential surface of the sonotrode, whilst the anvil with an angle piece and the recess of the sonotrode cooperate to form a compression space. According to the invention, the anvil (13, 23, 43) is assigned a bolt (17, 27, 47) which closes off the compression space laterally and which is movable essentially in a direction perpendicular to the working surface (10, 220, 420) of the sonotrode (1, 22, 42). It is thus possible to work on a smooth sonotrode surface, handling for welding purposes being simplified. <IMAGE>
