PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent image displaying white on a black background by arranging a layer having refractive index anisotropy on the inside between a pair of polarizing plates in addition to liquid crystal panels and polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:In a liquid crystal device holding a nematic liquid crystal 14 having positive dielectric anisotropy between a pair of transparent bases 11a, 11b on which transparent electrodes 12a, 12b and orientation films 13a, 13b are respectively provided and baring a pair of polarizing plates 19a, 19b on the outsides of the transparent substrates 11a, 11b, at least one layer 17 having refractive index anisotropy is provided on the inside of the pair of polarizing plates 19a, 19b in addition to the liquid crystal panels and polarizing plates. The orientation film layers of respective substrates 11a, 11b are opposed to each other to obtain structure arraying liquid crystal molecules 14 in parallel. In this constitution, a translucent spectrum can be made more neural in a visible light range, a display color and its background color can be respectively put close to white and black and the liquid crystal device with high picture quality can be obtained. |
