Process for cleaning furs and leathers by treating these materials with pieces of open-celled polyurethane foam having a density of from 60 to 120 kg/m<3> which have been treated with halocarbons. A polyurethane foam suitable for this purpose is obtained by reacting mixtures of polyalkylene glycols having an equivalent weight of from 200 to 2000 and polyhydroxy compounds having an equivalent weight of from 30 to 100 with isocyanato-containing precursors of polyisocyanates and polyalkylene glycols having an equivalent weight of from 50 to 500, preferably 300. Polyurethane foams of this kind are very retentive of the solvent, which is released only gradually. This ensures very gentle cleaning.
