PURPOSE:To obtain a semipermanent life by preventing the generation of a mechanical load for damaging an optical load, and also to make the titled controller small in size and light in weight, by applying a voltage between electrodes of a coating layer of the outside periphery of an optical fiber and executing a desired polarized wave control. CONSTITUTION:When a voltage is applied between electrodes 15a, 15b of a coating layer 14 which is provided on the outside periphery of a single mode optical fiber 11, the layer 14 is contracted as to its volume in the vertical direction of the polarization direction and a distortion is generated in a core 12, a mode conversion is generated between each orthogonal mode for propagating the core 12 and a plane of polarization rotates. A mode conversion quantity in such a case is varied by changing the voltage applied between the electrodes 15a, 15b, therefore, a rotational angle of the plane of polarization can be controlled by adjusting suitably the applied voltage. In such a way, a mechanical load for damaging the fiber 11 is not generated but a semipermanent life is obtained, and also since the electrodes 15a, 15b are provided only on the layer 14, the constitution can be made small in size, light in weight, and also compact. |
