A piston engine has a plurality of engine cylinders and engine pistons and inlet and exhaust elements and devices for ignition of the fuel. Each engine cylinder is equipped with an additional piston, which during the working stroke of the engine piston can be so displaced after the engine piston has passed top dead centre that it performs a stroke in the same direction as the engine piston, over the length of which stroke the working or compression chamber defined by the engine piston and additional piston remains approximately constant. In this way an increased torque, increased efficiency and greater power output are obtained. <IMAGE>
