PURPOSE:To obtain economically and easily a porous glass for a plane waveguide by forming a thin layer of the 2nd porous glass consisting of grains of <=0.5mu grain size and acting as a clad or the clad and a part of a core at the formation of the plane waveguide on the surface of the 1st porous glass having no relation to optical transmission. CONSTITUTION:The 2nd porous glass thin film consisting of grains of <=0.5mu grain size and acting as the clad or the clad and a part of the core at the formation of the plane waveguide is formed on the surface of the 1st porous glass. The stria free and uniform porous substance consisting of grains of <=0.5mu grain size can be comparatively easily obtained as a thin layer on a base plate which may correspond to the thickness required for supporting the substance itself though it is difficult to form the porous substance over a wide area. Although it is difficult to sinter the 2nd porous substance as bulk, its thin layer can be comparatively easily sintered. |
