<p>Non-aq. electric cell comprises an electrically conducting cylindrical cup, which is open at one end only; a spiral electrode aggregate in the cup, with an elongated cathode current collector of a C-contg. material bound to an electrically conducting metallic grid, an elongated anode plate of an active anode on a conducting metallic support and a non-woven glass separator or between the electrodes, coiled with these so that it forms the outside of the aggregate; a cathocid electrolyte in the cup, consisting of a soln. of an ionic conductor of a gp. V or Vi oxyhalide acting as depolariser; a cover for the cup; an insulating ring between the cover and the top of the cup, which seals these together; a first electric connection to one of the electrode and the cover, making this the first terminal; and a second electric connection to the other electrode and the cup, making this the second terminal; the metallic grid, support and insulating ring but being corrosed by the oxyhalide soln. The metallic grid and support pref. consist of Ni and the anode of Li. This cell construction ensures a large contact area and proximity of the anode to the cathode collector. The preformed anode, cathode collector and separator are flexible and can be coiled easily. The use of the mixt. contg. the liquid oxyhalide ensures complete utilisation of the interior of the cell, with no unnecessary space. The cell can be operated in a wide range of currents on discharge.</p> |
