PURPOSE: To improve a battery life when a liquid crystal back light is driven by a battery. CONSTITUTION: A discharge lamp lighting device is composed of a voltage detection means 13 detecting the output voltage of a battery 1, a dimming control means determining a dimming degree in response to a detected voltage, and a dimming means. A discharge lamp 12 is controlled so as to be bright when the voltage of the battery 1 is high and to be dark when the voltage is low. Thereby, the discharge lamp 12 is lighted with brightness in response to the consumption of the battery.
