Molten steel is produced in a converter by feeding scrap to the vessel, heating the scrap by burning a carbon-containing fuel in an oxygen stream which is fed into the vessel from a height of 50-100 reduced calibre above the converter bottom in an amt. of 8-15 Nm3/min per tonne scrap, feeding lime and then pig iron to the heated scrap and then decarburising with the oxygen lance at 1.5-2.5 times the normal work height above the calm surface of the melt when 5-10% of the total amt. of oxygen used during this refining is expended, the lance is lowered and reaches the work position after 20-25% of the total amt. of oxygen used during the refining is expended.
