Cleaning installations which are operated using chlorinated or fluorinated hydrocarbons have the drawback that said hydrocarbons decompose with the elimination of acid. The acid thus formed can cause damage to the cleaning installation. In order to detect this formation of acid, an acid detector is provided which consists of two wire-shaped metal parts which are immersed in an aqueous solution of the solvent. The wire-shaped metal parts consist of metals which are relatively far apart in the electrochemical potential series. The two wire-shaped metal parts are arranged in an electric circuit. As soon as acid is formed, that wire-shaped metal part which consists of the less noble metal is subject to corrosion, whereby this metal part is disintegrated which leads to an interruption in the current which triggers an alarm signal.
