The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a modular composite material. This method consists a in using balls 2, 3, 4 each comprising a continuous skin situated around a substantially spherical central core, preferably empty, b in positioning the said balls in contact with one another so as to be close to a geometric distribution of the compact crystallographic type, and c in fixing the said balls thus positioned with respect to one another exclusively via their contact zones, so that the said fastenings do not affect the empty spaces between balls. The composite material in accordance with the invention can be used to form working structures, in particular in the aerospace or transport field, for the purpose of combining a low specific mass with excellent mechanical characteristics. <IMAGE>
