A fuel injection pump is proposed in which in the lower speed range of the internal combustion engine a proportion of the amount of fuel delivered is diverted in order to extend the injection period. For this purpose the fuel injection pump, in a relief duct (27) with a throttle (37), has a control valve (31), the opening pressure of which is determined by a compression spring (33). For closing the control valve as the speed increases, the tension of the compression spring is increased by a shut-off element (45) which is connected to a speed governor or an adjusting lever. <IMAGE>
