PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a synthetic intermediate for santalol which is a principal aromatic component in sandalwood oil and for other perfumes, by isomerizing 2-pinene oxide in the presence of a repeatedly usable mixed catalyst consisting of zeolite and formic acid as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:2-Pinene oxide is isomerized in the presence of a mixed catalyst consisting of zeolite and formic acid in or without an organic solvent at 5-70 deg.C, preferably 30-40 deg.C to afford the aimed compound. The catalyst zeolite to be used in the above-mentioned reaction is mose preferably X, Y or mordenite, etc., and the amount thereof to be used is 0.01-0.3wt%, particularly 0.08-0.1, based on the 2-pinene oxide. The amount of the formic acid to be used is 0.1-1.0mol, preferably 0.5-1.0mol based on one mol 2-pinene oxide. Dichloroethane is particularly preferred for the solvent to be used. |
