PURPOSE:To improve the service life and performance of a lead-acid battery by forming the active material of an electrode plate surface layer with a mixture of lead sulfate and lead oxide, and infiltrating sulfuric acid into the active material surface layer. CONSTITUTION:A grating 5 placed on a belt is filled with an active materials paste made from lead oxide by means of a paste filler 6, while a belt conveyor 9 is running. While the grating 5 is transferred on the belt 9, it undergoes primary drying to reduce the water content in the filling paste to 4-5%. From a sulfuric acid tank 7 filled with sulfuric acid of specific gravity of 1.2 or over, sulfuric acid is supplied onto the periphery of rollers 8a, 8b, to wet the periphery surfaces of both rollers with sulfuric acid. The grating 5 is passed between both rollers in a short period of time, to change into PbSO4 a part of the surface layer of the active material made from lead oxide which fills the grating 5, by sulfuration. By this process, the surface layer is made from a mixture 4 of PbSO4 and PbO2 and the active material in the vicinity of the surface of the grating 5 remains to be PbO2. Electrode plate material 5b on which the active material is formed passes, on a belt conveyor 10, secondary drying and aging processes to become a positive plate. In this procedure, a lead-acid battery of long life and good voltage characteristics during discharging under high voltage can be formed. |
