PURPOSE:To obtain ethanol from methanol, Co and H2 in high selectivity, by using a catalyst system containing a Co-Ru based or Co-Ru-halogen based catalyst in suitable combination with different kinds of ligand of a tertiary phosphine and tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium salt. CONSTITUTION:Methanol is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen to give ethanol. In the process, a catalyst system consisting of (1) a Co compound (0.1- 100mg atoms expressed in terms of Co atoms based on 1mol methanol), (2) an Ru compound (0.05-50mg atoms expressed in terms of Ru atoms), (3) a halide selected from I, Br and Cl (0-200mg atoms expressed in terms of halogen atoms), (4) a tertiary phosphine (0.2-200mg atoms expressed in terms of P atoms) and (4) a tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium salt (0.1-100mg atoms expressed in terms of N atoms) within 1:0.05-1:0-4:0.2-10:0.1-5 atomic ratio range of Co:Ru:halogen:P:N. |
