PURPOSE:To improve the reliability and the service life by communicating the chamber the volume of which can be varied through an electro-distortion actuator to a high pressure chamber to be pressurized through the plunger of fuel injection pump only at the initial stage of injection. CONSTITUTION:Fuel injection pump 1 will pressurize the fuel sucked through a suction path 12 into a high pressure chamber 3 through rotation and reciprocal motion of plunger 6 inserted slidably in the cylinder bore 5 of cylinder 24 then deliver through a path 21, a distribution port 9, a distribution path, 14, etc. to the fuel injection valve 13. Here, a port 22 communicating with said path 21 is formed in the plunger 6 while a port 25 to be communicated with the port 22 until the plunger 6 is lifted by predetermined distance is formed in the cylinder 24. Said port 25 is communicated through the paths 26, 37, 40 with the variable volume chamber 39 in an injection rate controller 2 and the volume of said chamber 39 is varied through a piston 29 to be driven by an electro- distortion actuator 28.
