p-Alkenyl phenols are prepared by reacting an alkylated phenol having a replaceable hydrogen atom at the 4- position with an aliphatic aldehyde having two carbon atoms up to at least 20 carbon atoms in the molecule and a secondary amine; the p-alkenyl phenols are converted to substituted hydroxybenzaldehydes by direct oxidation in the presence of a catalyst.
