The present invention relates to retaining structures, methods for building these structures and means for implementing these methods. The retaining structure is essentially characterised by the fact that it comprises a stack of layers 15 of loose materials, with a flexible cover 16 surrounding each layer, a retaining wall 10 located on the edges 18 of these layers 15 at a certain distance from these edges so as to form a space 20, the wall having a height which is greater than that of the stack, in order to receive a continuous layer 31, located on the stack and a retaining slab covering the space 20. The retaining structure finds an advantageous application particularly for building roads or the like with slopes, for example in mountainous regions or on steep gradients. <IMAGE>
