摘要 In the rapid analysis of metal melts by taking a sample (6), producing a temp. gradient in the sample by non-uniform extn. during crystallisation and cooling of its high temp. (7) and low temp. (8) portions and then measuring the thermo-emf. between the sample (6) and a reference material, the novelty is that the temp. gradient is produced by maintaining the temp. of the high temp. portion (7) of the sample at the crystallisation temp. while cooling the low temp. portion. Also claimed is appts. for carrying out the analysis, consisting of a sampling device (1) comprising two intercommunicating chambers of different capacity, with main (9) and auxiliary (10) comparison electrodes, located in the larger and smaller chambers respectively, and with a measuring unit (14) connected to the electrodes (9,10). The novelty is that (i) the larger chamber is in the form of a main sleeve (2) with a bore (5) in its base and axially aligned with the smaller chamber; (ii) the electrodes (9,10) are made of a material with a thermo-emf. similar to that of the metal to be analysed; and (iii) the front face of the main comparison electrode (9) is located at the middle of the main sleeve (2).
