In a method for charging the reactor interior of a pebble bed reactor having fuel spheres, the latter are fed from above via a drop device and have a varying radial distribution, the drop device having a centrally arranged drop tube. In order to reduce the expenditure on equipment, in particular the number of drop tubes, during charging all the fuel elements (5, 9) are brought into the reactor interior (4) only through the centrally arranged drop tube (6), and the rate of fall of the fuel elements is varied in such a way that it is highly likely that when they impinge on the surface of the bulk cone which forms during charging they remain in the centre or are reflected radially, in accordance with the selected rate of fall. <IMAGE>
