PURPOSE:To improve the surface characteristic of beads by inclinedly irradiating an electron beam in the joint surfaces of bar-shaped pieces and flanges and penetrating the beam through the flanges thereby welding the bar-shaped pieces and the flanges. CONSTITUTION:Both ends of the plural deformed bars 11 as the bar-shaped members are engaged with the grooves of the flanges 12, 13 to constituted the sample of a small-sized screen cylinder. The electron beam 16 is inclined as shown by an arrow 19 (16 deg. angle of inclination) with the progressing direction of welding and is irradiated within the joint surfaces of the bars 11 and the flanges 12, 13. Welding is so executed in this stage that the electron beam 16 penetrates the flange 12 (or 13). The penetration beads 23 are uniformly formed and the appearance characteristic of the surface beads 24 is improved by the above-mentioned method. The penetration depth at the point of the slit part is deep and the fluctuation width of the depth is considerably decreased. The surface characteristic of the weld bead is thus improved.
