The method involves carrying out a control of a person protection unit (PS) depending upon a crash type, where impact sound signal is provided with crash type recognization. A rising function is provided from a filtered or integrated impact sound signal that is derived from the impact sound signal for the crash type recognization. The rising function is determined depending upon a difference of a predetermined threshold and the filtered or integrated impact sound signal. The crash type recognization is carried out depending upon a maximized rising function. An independent claim is also included for a controller for controlling a passenger protection unit, comprising an interface.
