PURPOSE:To improve ignitionability of an engine when it is in cranking operation, by electrifying an air heater, provided in an intake passage, at least only for a predetermined time before the cranking operation is started, in the case of the engine whose intake temperature rises by adiabatic compression. CONSTITUTION:An engine provides an intake port 5, equipped with an intake valve 4, to be opened to a combustion chamber 3 formed in a cylinder 1, further the engine sets an opening and closing valve 10 in an intake passage 8 communicating with the intake port 5. And the engine opens the opening and closing valve 10 in the half way of an intake stroke accordingly performs adiabatic compression by rapidly introducing intake into the combustion chamber 3. Here the engine, driving an opening and closing valve driving gear 11 on the basis of a valve open timing control signal 11' in accordance with an engine operative condition from a control means 12, thus controls the opening and closing valve 10 to be opened and closed. While the engine, providing an air heater 21 in the intake passage 8, controls the air heater 21 by an air heater operation control signal 21' from the control means 12 to be electrified at least only for a predetermined time before cranking is started. |
