PURPOSE:To enable a signal indicative of the total sum of color component values to be obtained at substantially the same time as a color separation signal by producing a signal indicative of a value corresponding to the sum of the color separation signals produced from a plurality of color-detecting portions from a reference light-receiving portion. CONSTITUTION:A color-discrimination apparatus comprises a semiconductor substrate 1, a plurality of photosensitive elements formed on the substrate 1 and optical filters for transmitting lights with different wave lengths from one another, said optical filters being provided on the photosensitive elements. Further, a plurality of color-detecting portions 11-13 and a reference light-receiving portion 14 formed on the substrate 1 so as to produce a signal indicative of a value corresponding to the sum of the outputs of the detecting portions 11-13 when a reference light is incident are also provided. When the signals from the light-receiving portion 14 formed on the same substrate 1 are read, a value corresponding to the total sum of color component values indicated by the color separating signals from the detecting portions 11-13 is obtained. Therefore, the operation of adding the color separation signals can be saved. Since the output of the light receiving portions 14 is independently obtained of the color separation signals, the ratio of the color separation signals, that is, a color component relative value can be easily obtained by using the color discrimination apparatus together with a logarithmic amplifier circuit and a differential amplifier circuit.
