PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as various drugs in high purity and inexpensively, by dehydrochlorinating inexpensively obtainable anthranilic acid as a starting raw material with terephthalic acid dichloride and subjecting the reaction product to intramolecular dehydration in the presence of a specific dehydrating agent. CONSTITUTION:Anthranilic acid and terephthalic acid dichloride are used as raw materials and subjected to dehydrochlorination to give N,N'-bis(0- carboxyphenyl)terephthalamide. Then, this synthetic intermediate is subjected to intramolecular dehydration by the use of phosphorus pentoxide as a dehydration reaction promoter in the presence of a solvent such as dimethylformamide, etc. at room temperature - the boiling point of the solvent, more preferably 50 deg.C- the boiling point of the solvent, to give the aimed compound. The amount of phosphorus pentoxide is sufficiently a theoretical equivalent required for dehydration of two molecules and a little excess amount may be used.
