PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin both in high yield and purity, by addition of epichlorohydrin to a copolymer resin from a phenol and dicyclopentadiene and by putting to specific process to prepare a dicyclopentadiene-modified epoxy resin to which an alkali is added. CONSTITUTION:Epichlorohydrin is selectively added to a copolymer resin from a phenol and dicyclopentadiene to prepare a dicyclopentadiene-phenol copolymer chlorohydrin ether. this ether, an intermediate, is put, in the presence of an alkali, to a reduced pressure atmosphere of 50-300mmHg; the water contained being eliminated by azeotropic distillation with the epichlorohydrin to carry out ring closing reaction while keeping the water content in the reaction system to <=2wt%. The resulting dicyclopentadiene-modified epoxy resin is dissolved in an organic solvent followed by addition of a small amount of an alkali to effect ring closure of trace amount of the residual chlorohydrin ether, thus obtaining the objective resin of formula (R is H or 1-9C alkyl; n is 0-15).
