PURPOSE:To obtain an alloy for metallizing capable of easily joining ceramics to an Al material at a relatively low temp. with high strength by adding a prescribed amount of Cu to Al. CONSTITUTION:This alloy for metallizing ceramics consists of 0.5-45wt% Cu and the balance Al. Powder of the alloy is spread on the surface of ceramics 1 to be joined or a plate of the alloy is placed on the surface, and they are heated to the m.p. of the alloy or above in vacuum, an inert gas or a reducing atmosphere. Cu in the alloy diffuses in the ceramics, forming a firm metallizing layer 3. A$ solder 4 is then held between the layer 3 and Al or an Al alloy as a base material 2 and heated in vacuum or an inert gas. The solder 4 diffuses evenly between the layer 3 and the base material 2 and can firmly join the ceramics 1 to the base material 2.
