PURPOSE:To provide a complete combustion of fuel and restrict a generation of nitrogen oxide by a method wherein combustion air is supplied from an intermediate point of heat-resistant porous object arranged downstream of a burner. CONSTITUTION:A heat-resistant porous object 5 which is supported by a partition wall 2 of a combustion chamber is arranged just above a flame hole surface 4 of a burner 3. Secondary air holes 6 are made in the partition wall 2 of the combustion chamber positioned substantially at a central part in a direction of height of the porous object 5, and the secondary air holes 6 are communicated with a secondary air hole 9 made at a lower part of the partition wall cover 7 through the secondary air passage 8. Since this combustion device has a double-stage combustion system, a volume of primary air contained in the mixture flowing out of the flame hole 4 of the burner 3 is restricted to a value lower than a theoretical air volume and the amount of air required for the remaining combustion is supplied through the secondary air holes 6. Therefore, since the combustion temperature is kept low through an entire combustion area, it is possible to restrict the production of the nitrogen oxide.
