PURPOSE:To increase the information quantity per a unit area, and to improve resolution by reflecting other information than an average gradation of an input data, such as edge information, etc., in a binary data matrix of a gradation processing unit. CONSTITUTION:A data of a 10X10 picture element area is extracted from a data on a buffer memory 108, and stored in a memory M1 in a gradation processing circuit. In this regard, in this gradation processing, an 8X8 picture element matrix is one processing unit, but in case of an edge extraction, a data of the outside of the 8X8 matrix is made necessary, therefore, a 10X10 matrix is formed by including the 8X8 picture element and data of the outside of each one picture element portion of its upper, lower, left and right. This extracting 10X10 matrix area moves successively by 8 picture elements each in the main scanning direction, whenever a processing of its area is ended, moves by an 8 picture element portion in the sub-scanning direction and repeats the processing, when it reaches the end position of the main scanning direction, repeats the main scan and the sub-scan in the same way, and processes all the data on the buffer memory 108.
