The invention relates to an apparatus on the one hand and the use of this apparatus on the other hand for generating computer-based signatures. The computer-based signing apparatus is intended to permit authentication of the identity of an individual with a view to authorising the use of an object or a service, for example a credit card, a memory card, a cheque card, a professional pass, etc. The computer-based signing apparatus represented in Figure 1 is constituted by a box 1 in which are incorporated mechanical and electronic components which are standard from an industrial point of view: - a display screen 2, - a microprocessor 3 in which a specific program is recorded, - a memory module 4 in which are recorded: - the internal code of the memory module, - the thirty-seven areas of twelve numerical characters, - a keyboard composed of twenty-six alphabetical keys 5. - a specialised function key 6 referenced: SERVICED - a specialised function key 7 referenced: SIGN - a switch 8 making it possible to manually switch on the apparatus, coupled with a device switching off the apparatus directly by the microprocessor 3. <IMAGE>
