According to the invention, a plunger is fixedly fastened to the hydraulic operating cylinder of the press and projects into the interior of the working piston, which is filled with the operating medium, is hydraulically connected via the axial bore of the said plunger to a stroke transmission unit which converts the linear movement into a rotary movement and is connected via a coupling which transmits the torque in a single direction and via an adjustable mechanical gear to a wheel which is mounted on a shaft so as to run freely. The pointer of a scale, the turning knob of the said pointer and a change-over switch are fastened to the shaft, a radial cam of the wheel, which is mounted so as to run freely, interacting on the one hand with the change-over switch which actuates the reverse valve of the hydraulic operating cylinder and on the other hand with a stationary microswitch of a signal transmitter.
