PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of the whole of a system by controlling the turning-on time of the busy output of a printer and distinguishing running-out of paper, transmission error, etc. by the length of this time. CONSTITUTION:The timing to a host computer is acquired by a busy signal indicating whether the printer can receive data or not to perform the busy control of the printer. If trouble occurs in the printer, the busy output is turned on for a certain time T; and this time T is switched to a time T1, a time T2, a time T3, and a time T4 longer than the time T in case of running-out of paper, machine error, transmission error, and offline respectively. If error occurs in the printer, the busy output having the time T1, T2, T3 or T4 corresponding to this error is sent. This turning-on time T1, T2, T3, or T4 is checked in the host side to discriminate error contents, and the processing for error is performed.
