Prepn. of the acetyl-cinnamates (I) comprises condensing R3CHO with CH3COCH2COOR4 under Knoevenagel reaction conditions. R3 is 5-7C cycloalkyl, heteroaryl such as furanyl, indolyl, pyridyl, thienyl and aryl e.g. phenyl, naphthyl or phenyl substd. by acetamide, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, cyano, halo, hydroxy, nitro, CF3 (trifluoromethyl)sulphon yl. R4 is lower alkyl (lower alkoxy) lower alkyl - loweraminoalkyl, lower haloalkyl or di(lower alkyl) -lower aminoalkyl.
