PURPOSE:To prevent a smear from generating without operating a horizontal transfer CCD at a high speed in a charge transfer type solid-state image pickup device by sweeping a smear charge transferred from vertical transfer means from gate means to exhaust means. CONSTITUTION:A charge storage unit 1 formed by arranging many charge integration cells for storing charge in response to the quantity of light of a formed photo-image, vertical transfer means 3 having a vertical transfer route for transferring vertically charge from the unit 1 and a drive unit for applying a drive signal thereto, and horizontal transfer means 5 receiving charge transferred vertically by the means 3 with a horizontal transfer route for transferring the charge horizontally are provided. Such a solid state image sensor has charge exhaust means 7 receiving charge transferred by the means 3 for exhausting the charge, and gate means 6 for controlling the sweeping of the charge transferred from the means 2 to the means 7. Smear charge transferred from the means 2 can be swept by the means 6 to the means 7.
