PURPOSE:To enhance a capacity of converting a character code to image data, by storing the size and position information for a rectangle containing all the informations for black in the matrix as the informations for a character, in addition to character pattern data to be stored in a character pattern memory circuit. CONSTITUTION:A control part 1 converts an inputted character code to a character number (l) stored in a character pattern memory circuit 2 to calculate the address in Al=97.l. The read of information with this address results in the read of (a) and (b) for the character under processing. When the left half of the character pattern is transferred, the control part 1 reads the character pattern data with the Y address Y+(a) wherein (a) is added to the Y address to be sent to an image memory 3 and the transfer data number of (b) words, while determining the address to feed to a character pattern memory circuit 2 as Al+a+1, to send to the image memory 3. When the right half is transferred, the character pattern data with the Y address Y+(a), the X address X+16 and the transfer data number (b) is sent to the image memory 3, while determining the transfer start address as Al+a+49.
