New ceric oxide, process for its manufacture and its applications in the polishing of glass, ceramic materials and other inorganic or organic, vitreous-type materials. Ceric oxide is characterised in that it consists of a crystallographic phase of CeO2 type and in that it has a specific surface less than 10 m<2>/g measured after calcination at a temperature of between 400 and 600 DEG C. The process of manufacture of this ceric oxide, which is characterised in that it consists: - in reacting cerium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide; - in separating the precipitate obtained; - in drying it and in calcining it at a temperature between 150 and 1000 DEG C. <IMAGE>
