NEW MATERIAL:To compound expressed by formula I (R represents 1-10C alkyl or alkoxyl; ring A represents formula II or formula III; B represents formula IV or formula V; X represents F, Cl or Br; n is 2 or 3). EXAMPLE:4'-Fluoro-4-biphenylyl-6-heptylnaphthalene-2-carboxyla-te. USE:A liquid crystal composition. The compound exhibits a nematic liquid crystal line phase at a relatively high temperature and has good compatibility with other liquid crystal substances. By adding a small amount of this compound, N-I point can be hightened without increasing viscosity thereof, and both DELTAepsilonand DELTAn can be increased respectively. PREPARATION:A carboxylic acid chloride expressed by formula VI is reacted with a phenol derivative expressed by formula VII in the presence of pyridine to obtain a compound expressed by formula I.
