PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for the production of amino acid, etc., from an inexpensive raw material in high yield and selectivity, by reacting a substituted pyruvic acid ester with an acid amide under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II can be produced by reacting the substituted pyruvic acid ester of formula I [A is (substituted) phenyl; R<1> is alkyl] with the acid amide of formula R<2>-CONH2 [R<2> is (halogen- substituted) alkyl] in the presence of an acid having a pka of <=3 (e.g. an organic sulfonic acid such as p-toluenesulfonic acid, sulfonic acid-type cation exchange resin, etc.) at 100-200 deg.C, preferably 120-160 deg.C while removing the produced water from the reaction system. The amount of the acid amide is <=3mol, preferably 1.2-2.5mol per 1mol of the compound of formula I. |
