PURPOSE:To quickly evaluate the self-discharge of a storage battery, by cutting off a connecting portion between cells to electrically insulate the cut-off ends of the portion from each other and connect the ends to a circuit which can be opened and closed outside the jar of the battery, and by measuring the quantity of an electrical current resulting from the creep of an electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of assemblies each comprising a positive electrode plate 2, a negative electrode plate 3 and a separator 4 are housed in the cells of a battery jar 1 and connected to each other through electrode pillars 5. No. seal is provided between the cells. A lead battery without a partition wall is thus constructed. The connecting portion of each electrode pillar 5 is cut off so that the cut-off ends of the portion are electrically insulated from each other by a resin 6 and connected to lead wires 7 and a switch 8. The switch 8 is closed when the battery is charged and discharged. The switch 8 is opened when the quantity of an electrical current resulting from the creep of an electrolyte is measured. The amount of the self-discharge of the battery is calculated from the measured quantity of the electrical current. The self-discharge due to the creep can thus be evaluated easily and quickly. |
