The invention is intended to permit the feeding, compression and expansion of gases with utilisation of the expansion work contained in the gas and the work resulting from the pressure differential. This is achieved by means of a device which is similar in construction to Roots blowers connected in series. If a smaller volume flow is fed into the space between the pairs of rotors than flows out, the density of the outflowing volume flow falls. The expansion work performed by the gas and the work resulting from the pressure differential can be fed to the crankshaft.
