PURPOSE:To obtain an edited copy excellent in picture quality by providing a picture processing element that records an original image as a latent image and a variable slit that can set optionally the extent of the original image to be recorded in the picture processing element thereby making edition and trimming relatively simply. CONSTITUTION:Specified voltage is applied between transparent electrodes of both sides of a BSO element 1 by a high tension power source 14 and a switching circuit 15 of a BSO equipment 11. A light source 6 is put on uniformely by a power source 13 to irradiate the BSO element 1, then applied voltage is inverted by the switching circuit 15. An analyzer 7 is moved by a solenoid etc. to a position shown by broken lines in the figure shunted from the light path. The width and position of opening of a variable slit 30 and position in X, Y directions of the BSO element 1 are set by driving motors 31, 16 and X, Y stage 32 according to the content of trimming. Then, an original placed on a contact glass is illuminated by an exposure lamp 21 and exposure scanning is executed, at the same time, the BSO element 1 is moved in Y direction at a speed corresponding to the reduction rate of writing. Then, the part of the original image corresponding to the width of opening of the variable slit 30 is written in the BSO element 1.
