COUNTERBALANCE DEVICE AND TORSION MEMBER USABLE THEREIN INVENTOR: GEORGE H. LEONARD A torsion member D is surrounded by a sleeve E connected to the torsion member at one point, the torsion member being fixedly supported at another point; a counterbalanced part B and the sleeve E carry cam and follower elements F to produce a desired counterbalancing effect. The torsion member comprises elongated narrow polygonal cross-section elements, sides of which engage one another, the exposed surfaces defining a polygon, connections to points along the torsion member being effected by bodies 28 having appropriately shaped openings 30 into which said elements are received so as to confine and non-rotatably engage at least some of the elements. The torsion member is constructed so that a variety of torsion element groupings can be used, with a greater variation being possible by modifications of those openings, so that great latitude in operating characteristics can be achieved with a standardized construction.
|
