PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a boiler compound, detergent, chelating agent or synthetic intermediate, by reacting glyoxal with water in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an inorganic acid salt of an element selected from Al, Ga, In, Sn, Ti, Zr, Nb, V and Cr. CONSTITUTION:Glycolic acid is produced by the intramolecular redox reaction of glyoxal with water under heating at about 150-200 deg.C using a catalyst consisting of a salt of an element selected from aluminum, gallium, indium, tin, titanium, zirconium, niobium, vanadium and chromium (e.g. aluminum nitrate, tin chloride, vanadyl sulfate, zirconium oxynitrate, etc.). EFFECT:The objective compound can be produced in high selectivity and conversion with a single-step reaction. |
