PURPOSE:To produce the title magnetic recording medium having uniform magnetic characteristics with high capacity and at high speed by using a material consisting essentially of calcium oxide for a vaporization source crucible contg. a ferromagnetic metal alloy. CONSTITUTION:A ferromagnetic material 12 for vapor deposition set in a crucible 11 consisting essentially of calcium oxide is heated by an electron beam emitted from an electron beam generator 10 and vaporized to form a thin film of the ferromagnetic material 12 on a substrate 3 traveling along a substrate carrier 8 on a cylinder. Calcium oxide has a high b.p., the oxygen pressure at high temps. is low and the oxide is comparatively stable in vacuum. A defect of slaking due to the high reactivity with water molecules can be eliminated by limiting the apparent porosity to <=4% and using the vaporization source crucible consisting essentially of high-purity (>=98.5wt%) calcium oxide.
