NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 2-12C straight chain alkyl; *C is asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:2-Methylbutyl (+)-4-trans-4'-hexylcyclohexyl)carboxyresorcylidene-4- aminocinnamate. USE:A liquid crystal substance exhibiting ferroelectricity, having properties of rapid response of the molecular orientation by influence of an electric field and utilizable as an electrooptical switching element. PREPARATION:A beta-resorcylaldehyde expressed by formula II is reacted with a trans-4-alkylcyclohexylcarbonyl chloride expressed by formula III under ordinary esterification conditions to give a compound expressed by formula IV, which is ten condensed with a (+)-2-methybutyl 4-aminocinnamate expressed by formula V through dehydration by the conventional method to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
