The invention relates to installations for self-service distribution of articles which are packed in an integral packing comprising an identification which is easily recordable by any appropriate method (barcodes etc.). It comprises an enclosure which is only accessible via a "key" which is registered at each change of customer and whose registration is recordable at the different points where use will be made of it. All the articles are in mechanical dispensers which are capable of being controlled by the same "key". A special "key" is recorded for each person stocking the dispensers. The collection of arrangements, gates, dispensers, devices checking out the articles at the till, charging, taking payment, etc. is linked to a computer network which provides permanent monitoring of stock, of payments and prevents theft and mistakes in charging.
