PURPOSE:To detect abnormality of the reference position signal and angular position signal of a crank shaft respectively by detecting the abnormality of either the reference position signal or position signal by a specific combination of logical states that the 1st and the 2nd flags indicate. CONSTITUTION:The 1st flag is placed in a specific logical state unless a specific number of the 2nd position signals T24 are generated after the 1st reference position signal T04 is generated. Further, the 2nd flag is set in a specific logical state if the 1st position signal T04 is generated after the 1st reference signal T04 is generated and before a specific number of the 2nd position signals T24 are generated. Then, the abnormality of an least either of the 1st reference position signal T04 and the 2nd position signals T24 is detected by the specific combination of the logical states that the 1st and the 2nd flags indicate respectively. Consequently, the abnormality of at least the reference position signal and angular position signal of the crank shaft is detected respectively.
