Device for unwinding a metal wire from a wire coil (bundle) of which the axis is arranged vertically on an uncoiling device, the said wire being guided on a roller arranged at the upper part of a portal structure fastened to the ground and including in the vicinity of its lower part a pulley for guiding wire. Above the upper return roller 7, provision is made for a controlled passage orifice 18 of which the cross section is such that it permits the passage of a knot formed by the wire 8 without detriment to the tightening of the knot, the said orifice 18 including a means 17 for detecting the passage of the knot actuating an alarm device or a device for stopping the machine for processing the wire. The invention is used in wire drawing for unwinding the wire. <IMAGE>
