NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R represents H or lower alkyl; X represents OH, carboxyl or lower alkoxycarbonyl; Y represents OH, lower alkoxy or carboxyl). EXAMPLE:2-Hydroxy-5-(O-carboxybenzylidene)-benzoic acid. USE:Useful as a remedial agent for ulcer, and useful for therapy of asthma, rheumarthritis and autoimmune diseases. PREPARATION:An aldehydobenzoic acid expressed by formula II is reacted with aromatic amines expressed by formula III in a solvent such as, for example, methanol, chloroform or THF at room temerature or under heating to obtain the compound expressed by formula I. When the reaction is carried out in an anhydrous solvent in an atmosphere of an inert gas such as nitrogen gas using a water separating apparatus, a good result in terms of color and yield of reaction product can be achieved.
